Rainy Lake Weekly Fishing Report
Thursday, June 20, 2024
Fishing on Rainy Lake has been outstanding! With the stronger wins that we've been having we have been fishing shallows for the larger slot fish. Pitching 1/8 oz jigs with fat heads into the shallows has been working very well.
For those calm days, you will find more active fish in deeper waters. We actually started catching fish out on the reefs in brake lines up to 26 feet of water! In the last Guide trip, we utilize slip over and a tail hooked minnow, which worked very well. Nothing better than watching a bobber go down and seeing a big walleye on the end!

Fishing on Rainy Lake has been producing full limits on a daily basis. Fish sizes range from 11 inches to 29 1/4 inches long. We continue to see good keepers with little problems. The last few days, we have been using jibs in 28-30 feet of water.
If there's any wind blowing, find a shoreline. Any shoreline will produce larger slot fish that make for excellent photographs!

As water continues to warm, the fishing on Rainy Lake continues to heat up as well! The last week, our guides have been using a jig and a minnow in roughly 16-20 feet of water to target walleye. Other guides have been having success in 6 to 10 feet of windblown shorelines and bays.
Crappies have been picking up and have been producing high numbers in multiple trips. When 15 inch crappies are caught, we release them back into the water as those are best for the fish ecosystem! Survive and Thrive.

The Rainy Lake walleye bite has been slow and steady. If the wind is blowing, the fish can be found in shallow, wind-blown shorelines. Hitchcock, Saginaw, and Lost Bay have been great fish producers so far. Normally, Black Bay would be a good location for this time of year, but we have not had much success in this area yet this season.
If the wind is calm with bright sun, we are finding fish in deeper water, approximately 22-26 feet. These fish have been eating jig and shiners or jig and fatheads. We have not had much success using leeches or crawlers in any location on the Lake yet.
As always, if you are looking for some help locating and catching fish, use a Rainy Lake Fishing Guide! We'd be happy to help you.

The bite on Rainy has transitioned from 3-5 feet out to 4-8 feet of water. Wind blown bays and shorelines have continued to produce well. The crappie bite is still slower, but a few reports of a handful of crappies are in the Black Bay and Ratt Root area.
As always, this time of year, moving water is a good place to catch fish, like the Brule Narrows, Kettle River, and the Rainy River, which have been consistenly producing fish.

Another great opener on Rainy Lake! Guides found success in shallower waters pitching a jig into wind-blown bays and points. Three to six feet of water proved to be the best depth for walleye. Guides also had success in 35-40 feet of water in current producing areas of the lake (Brule Narrows and Kettle River).
Fish from the shallows will start to transition deeper; however, utilizing the same technique of tipping a jig with a shiner or flat-head chub will be most successful. Good luck on your fishing this week!
The first person to contact Rainy Lake Guiding after reading this report using the word "walleye" will receive a Rainy Lake Guiding coozie to keep your beverages cold while you're on the lake!

As I submit this fishing tip, I think in just a few short days, Minnesota fishing opener will be here!
We will be using a very old, tried and true method of pitching jigs into the shallows of windblown shoreline. We will tip the 1/4 ounce jig with either a chub or a shiner. Keeping the rod tip high, bounce the jig back to the boat after casting it up to the shoreline.
If pulling spinners is your preferred method, we also recommend using 1/4 258 ounce sinkers while pulling a hammered spinner, gold or copper. Utilize speed differences - sometimes a quicker delivery will impact the bite!
Rainy Lake has some of the best fishing guides in the state of Minnesota. Any of the 20 fishing guides in the Rainy Lake Guide Association will be able to help put you on walleyes and show you an excellent time on Rainy Lake!
